The one with the... Trash Can

I know it's silly to blog about a trash can, but believe me, this one is worthy of its own post!  For a few years now, we've had this Umbra Flippa Trash Can from Bed Bath and Beyond.  It served us well for us as a kitchen trash can for a while.  Back when we lived in a very small (500 sq ft) condo in DC the thin design of this black beauty was a perfect fit for a small slot in right next to the fridge. Then... we moved into the house... and... we got a dog.  It didn't take long for our dog Pluto to watch us throw things into the trash can and figure out that if he jumped on the trash can, he could put his head in through the rotating lid and even tip the whole can over.  No matter how much we discouraged it, he still could not resist.

Here's the old trash can...

And here's the guilty dog eyeing the trash can...

At my parent's house in California, they have a motion sensored touchless trash can. You wave your hand across the top of the trash can and it opens!  Even better, my Dad built a base for the trash can and added wheels so that he could roll it around while he's working in different parts of the kitchen!  Ever since I saw theirs and the creative/functional base they added to it, I had trash can envy.  So when it came time to come up with a Pluto-safe solution, I thought it was perfect! I purchased my very own motion sensored touchless trash can from Overstock and Dave very nicely built me a base with wheels... just like my parent's! (My mom even mailed us the wheels for the base when I told her I wanted one just like theirs)

Here's the new iTouchless trash can. Isn't it awesome?

Here's a view of it from the side, so you can see the base and wheels that Dave built:

This is what the top and bottom of the base looks like. The top of the base has two pieces of plywood stuck together so that the trash can fits in there nicely and doesn't slip off.

If you wave your hand over the trash can... it opens!  There are also "open" and "close" buttons so that you can keep it open if you want.   I love it because not only can I roll it around the kitchen to wherever I am... I also don't ever have to touch it, so no grossness on my hands!  One of the only cons to this trash can is that sometimes when you walk past it, it will open on its own.  Also, it requires two D-sized batteries, which we usually don't have on hand.  Other than that, it's the best trash can a girl could ever ask for... maybe unless they come up with one that takes itself out??

I do not trust your trash can. It is Dalek-like, and worries me.
