The one with... Dave's Halloween Costume
I have to admit...Halloween is not one of my favorite holidays. I never really liked it as a kid, mainly because it was always difficult for me to decide on a costume. Even now as an adult, the thought of dressing up is not so appealing. Every year, some friends throw a Halloween party and usually we don't dress up, but this year, we thought ahead (sort of).
The week before Halloween Dave decided that he wanted to be a Warbler from Glee. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past two years and don't know what Glee or the Warblers are, it's an awesome TV show on Fox about a high school glee club. The story lines are fun and entertaining, but it's the cast's singing and covers of popular songs that makes it so great. The Warblers are an all-boys acapella group from a rival school and they are always seen on the show wearing their Dalton Academy blazers.
The first task of creating a Warbler's costume was to find a navy blue blazer. We headed to a thrift store nearby and because it was so well organized, we found one that was marked for $5.99! It actually fit Dave pretty well too! I was super excited! And you really can't beat the $5.99 price tag... or can you? When Dave went to check out, he got an an extra 25% off because it was Monday (yay!) So for a mere $4.49, we had the most important part of the costume in hand.
Next, the Dalton Academy patch that goes on the chest below the pocket. I printed out an image of the patch and using red felt, I cut out the design and glued it onto a piece of black felt (Michael's didn't have Navy blue felt so I had to settle for black) with tacky glue.
Here is the patch laid out directly on the jacket (this was before I glued it on the black felt.)
And here it is actually on the felt and laid out on the jacket. I hand-sewed the patch onto the jacket, making sure that I didn't sew the pocket shut.
Then on to the next step, which was probably the most difficult and time consuming. I had to sew red edging on the jacket. We got some cross grain red ribbon in the 1.5 inch width from Michael's and I ironed it in half to make it easier for me to sew. (I forgot to take pictures of the sewing process).
The final touch was the navy and red striped tie. Unfortunately the thrift store didn't carry it, and oddly enough, neither did the Macy's or JCPenney that we checked out. We thought that surely the department stores would carry a simple power tie like this, especially in the DC area! With no tie in sight and only a few days until the Halloween party, I went online and ordered one from Amazon.com (here). It came out to about $23 with 2-day shipping. We wouldn't usually spend that much for a Halloween costume, but Dave says he will wear the tie regularly to work, so we didn't mind paying a little more.
And finally it was all done! Dave already had gray pants, a white dress shirt, and black dress shoes that he wears for work.
